Two 6 year old Maori boys from small town Kaiwaka have big dreams. In a blood-brother pact, they swear their allegiance to one day live in america on a small tourist replica statue of liberty. Now 19 and living pay-packet to pay-packet, Shane and Daniel realise their dream is fading. Over a beer, Daniel reckons it would be easier if they could bring America here. That’s it!

The next morning, Shane wakes up and decides he is American. He talks American and soon everything he wears, eats and drives becomes American much to the annoyance and amusement of Daniel and the townsfolk. During an argument with Daniel, Shane turns to walk out the bar and literally bumps into Andrea. In his lovely American accent he apologises. A sucker for an American accent, the English backpacker is hooked.

Andrea puts her backpacking on hold to stay with Shane. Soon, Daniel realises Andrea has fallen for Shane and thinks Shane needs to come clean, but Andrea has already overheard enough! Feeling betrayed and her trust broken she leaves a heartbroken Shane and Kaiwaka behind.

A few days later, an American film company come through the town on a location scout and they hear about the boy pretending to be American. They interview Shane and send the footage back to America where it is shown on the national news. Shane becomes a big hit with the American people and they petition for Shane to be given a green card - and he is. Shane can’t believe his dream has actually come true but sad that Daniel is not part of it. On the day that Shane is to leave, Andrea returns and declares her love for Shane. Shane now faces the biggest dilemma of his life - the girl or the dream?
