The quiet, idyllic life of Lake Tutaikure is disturbed when a group of stereotypical horror movie teenagers (the Jock, the Pretty One, the Ethnic Minority, etc...) are found dead after skinny-dipping at midnight. Charged with solving the unusual crime scene (the teenagers all have bled to death and are missing various limbs, apparently eaten away) is Rua Tuapene.
Rua is the Community Constable of his home town and this case is way out of Rua's league. Since it appears that the teens have been eaten by an animal, he enlists his cuzzie, Hemi, a local DOC worker, to try and find out what kind of animal killed the teens. Rua and Hemi run into Eraita, whose lineage is part of the Kaumatua. All three went to school together. Eraita is staunch and beautiful and both Rua and Hemi try their best to get her attention.
Together the trio try to unravel the mystery of the lake and its deadly inhabitants...
