At one time or another every adult has looked at the next generation of teenagers and seen them as useless insects - worthless buzz-seeking drones and fashion maggots chewing on the roots of society. John Mavis is a timid, reserved court stenographer who thought he had a better-than-average understanding of the world. At the end of one of the worst days imaginable, he finds himself with his fence tagged, his house in flames and his wife and daughter abducted. He is forced to turn to the most unlikely of allies: a vigilante neighborhood-watch group who lead him deep into the belly of the middle-aged suburban underground. A schoolteacher on the edge of sanity, a biologist, a retired farmer, a librarian, and an ex-con turned exterminator join forces with John as he attempts to rescue his family from the bugs.
How did this infestation occur? Who is "The Mantis"? And how can one distinguish between a prototypical teenager and a mindless sack-of-meat being operated like a puppet?
