In an alternate Victorian world advanced clockwork and steam technology has revolutionized the city of Voltaria Sanguinoth. Automation is visible everywhere, in the great steam sky-rail, horseless carriages, and ornate steam driven iron elevators. Streets are lit with the bulbs of the new Tesla energy. It is a golden age of science.
When Mr Grymmstone, a reclusive gentleman metaphysic and scientist stumbles on a murder he returns the victim, a beautiful young girl named Treacle, to life. Through his arts, Grymmstone also binds the murderer, Feendysh, to serve and protect the Treacle.
Unfortunately in doing so, Grymmstone breaks the laws of death. Death abdicates, and the dead once again walk abroad. The deceased are leaving the great city cemetery, finding what is left of their desiccated bodies and seeking the fresher flesh of the living.
Grymmstone, his assistant Elodia, the murdered girl Treacle, and Feendysh, battle through ghosts and ghouls and the living dead. They journey though the great cemetery of Voltaria Morte. They battle the fallen heroes in the military catacombs beneath the cemetery, and finally reach the realms of Death. Along the way the murdered girl Treacle, learns to control gifts obtained beyond the grave.
In the Halls of the Dead, Grymmstone and his companions attempt to persuade Death to take back dominion over the dead. Death, affronted by Grymmstone’s meddling, is not so easily convinced however and Grymmstone and his companions must make a dreadful choice. They must defeat Death, to save all life.
