On their short cut home through the forest, in a challenge to beat the school bus, three boys encounter an ancient force.

Fueled by a dare, Toby (the jock) , Josh (the nerd) and Hatu (the sensible one), get off the school bus early one afternoon and venture through the woods to beat their bus home. But beating the bus home is only part of the challenge. Since they were children they had been warned by their elders never to enter this forest, for within it lies a dangerous swamp. Within this swamp lives an ancient witch who guards the forest creatures and who unleashes cruel and monstrous punishment to those who dare defy her boundaries.

On their journey Hatu discovers a semi submerged ancient whare revealing a carving of Kaitiaki – a half human, half bird guardian of the land.

The boys have not gone unnoticed.

They encounter dead cats hanging from trees and strange, curious birds. When Toby and Josh slaughter an old eel for fun they are suddenly confronted by an old woman whom in the process of scolding them for killing her eel is accidentally shot by Toby and collapses into the swamp.

But she is not what she seems.

What happens next leads the boys fleeing for their lives. Racing back the way they came they realize that whatever is chasing them from beneath the earth is incredibly fast and strong.

And hungry.

And severely pissed off.

Kaitiaki.

She is coming.
