DOC workers Terry, John, Fiona and Tina have gone to Arthurs Pass to investigate some recent kea deaths. Some keas were found shot dead on a table. It is suspected that it was the work of local sheep farmers angry at the kea for attacking their livelihood. Many others have died as a result of recent 1080 drops in the area. The kea population is getting smaller and smaller. But trampers in the area are finding that the kea, normally known as a cheeky bird, has now become downright angry and aggressive. They seem to be adapting to survive by taking their fight to the human! Is it time for retribution? When before they may have pecked the odd car apart, nicked the odd passport or lunch, and attacked the odd sheep or even horse, they are now moving on to bigger and better things. The trampers, the DOC workers and the local sheep farmers are beginning to find they are not so much caught in a game of cat and mouse, but a game of bird and human. But whereas the angry farmers want the keas dead, the DOC workers want to protect them and find out what’s eating at our native bird, and the trampers just want to get to safety, the rules of the game have become a little more complicated. Whatever the case the squawky birds are trying to tell us something – 'Don’t mess with nature or nature might just mess with you!!!'
