A modern retelling of the classic Grecian quest story involving the Underworld defines this horror trilogy.

‘The Underworld wasn’t so much an end-place but a place of before and after, a haven for those forming and reforming. Abound, was pillars of spirit-flesh and mounds of unformed bodies. These twisted, deformed souls were wholly alive, trying unsuccessfully to reconstruct their disposed bodies.
Yet nothing in their shape resembled anything remotely human other than as a base material. It was animated substance without intelligent design; each knotted ebullient mass fused together in a parody of flesh.
Like a rainforest, everything was growing on top of one another, violently striving for the light of life. Nothing was static; everything was in a constant state of agitation, old forms exploding into new ones.’

Charon, avid explorer, treasure seeker and part-time mercenary embarks on a doomed quest, which leads him deep into unfamiliar territory. Driven there by an insatiable hunger for glory, he awakens an ancient evil.
Charon, who possesses all the requisite flaws, is a living gateway, a portal to the Otherworld, allowing one of the immortal Sage Kings to escape through his empty existence. Through him, a magical fiend is born, a terrible shape-shifter who can shed its skin like an insect each time it claims a host. It is a scavenger of souls, spreading death like a parasite as it lives and feeds on the corpse-rind of the world.
