Santos Silva teaches MMA to his students at a small dusty gym in any-town New Zealand. To his students he is a quiet but immensely skilled martial artist, but he also harbours a dark secret...
In his former life, in his hometown of Rio De Janiero, Santos was the feared champion of a ruthless underground MMA circuit, where winning was the only option. Santos dominated his opponents with a fearsome combination of brutality and fearlessness, so much so that in his last fight he inadvertently killed his opponent. The guilt of this became too much for Santos, so he disappears from the circuit, and reappears a changed man, teaching MMA in New Zealand.
However, Santos' past catches up with him, when the circuit makes a stop in New Zealand. Tom, Santos's star pupil, enters the circuit's local tournament, convinced he has what it takes to win. Santos is forced to re-enter the seedy fight scene, coming face-to-face with the ruthless Proprietor of the circuit, to try and stop Tom following in his own footsteps.
Because in these fights you always lose more than you win...
