Seven year old Jack Bolton gets out of bed and goes to the bathroom. He blinks his bleary eyes in horror. During the night his mum painted it PINK. That’s not good. Once a month his mum spends the night painting everything her new favourite colour. Everything! The toilet, the fireplace, the cups and plates, the sofa. And he knows that laid out on his bed will be pink clothes. Jack cannot go to school wearing pink clothes! Jack and his little brother and sister are gonna have to wag school again.
Jack’s mum has not been well since his dad died. She works really hard at two jobs. Jack has kept his promise to his dad to be “the man of the house” and so Jack looks after his siblings and cooks the tea. And he looks after his mum too when she cries.
The Bolton kids spend their wagging days and school holidays playing harmless pranks on their neighbours. Except for the scary old man in the derelict house who gives them the evil eye. They are The Dirt Bomb Gang.
When they get wrongly blamed for tagging and vandalism at the school, the Boltons get a visit from a Social Worker called Edith Quirk. The children overhear Edith criticizing their mother and talking about taking them away.
Jack resolves to keep his promise to his father and to protect his family and The Dirt Bomb Club hatches a plot to kidnap Edith.
After several bungled attempts they finally nab Edith with the help of an unlikely ally – the scary old man from across the road.
This coming of age adventure rescues a family, heals a lonely old man and sees a young boy become a hero.
