Dead bodies are turning up in alleyways across the city along with a strange glyph that is seared into the alleyway walls. The same glyph is also on the chest of the victims burned into their flesh. Detective Nick Hannigan thinks he has a freaky serial killer on his hands.
That is until his childhood friend Tim Lanning, a war photographer back from a posting in Afghanistan, tells Nick about the same sign showing up there along with their own unexplained dead bodies.
Then off the wires comes a bulletin from Interpol. Police departments around the world are reporting similar incidents - the glyph is everywhere. Massive riots have broken out some cities. Tim wants to help out but Nick rebuffs him.
To add to the mystery, the forensics team can’t identify any of the victims with the standard biometric tests - they just don’t seem to exist. Nick needs a larger team but the department is swamped as the city is hit with a massive increase in missing person cases and swath of unexplained suicides. Nick begins to think they’re all connected.
Tim can’t leave the mystery alone and tells Nick about his research learning of an ancient order connected to the glyph - spoken of in hushed voices and with fear. Tim wants to help and although unorthodox Nick needs it.
As the John and Jane Doe’s pile up and the city starts to go to hell. Nick and Tim dig deeper in the mystery of the glyph discovering that more is at stake then just a few dead bodies. Humanity itself is under threat and that the only way to stop civilisation from falling is to put their faith in an Order that terrifies people and history has tried to erase.
