The Guilt Sniffer

A “Team M&M” FILM
WRITTEN BY Mark Prebble & Marion Shortt

Detective Ruth Wright is the most meticulous cop on the force. Her methodical precision has put New Zealand’s most notorious criminals behind bars. But nobody has noticed, not even her father Police Captain Nathaniel Wright. Everyone is swept away by the hype and instant results of Dr Robert MacBride, aka The Guilt Sniffer.

This glory hunting crime fighter was born with a peculiar gift - he can smell emotions. Lust. Jealousy. Guilt. They all have their own distinctive scent and MacBride can smell it from 20 paces. His cock-sure arrogance and bravado sees him steamroll through investigations, championed at every turn by his mentor, the same Police Captain Nathaniel Wright.

When a serial killer tragically murders her father, Wright throws the full force of her formidable forensicology into the case. But pressure is on Commissioner Swift to wrap up this high-profile case, pronto! She brings in The Guilt Sniffer and forces the reluctant duo to partner.

Can the bickering sleuths put their logic and instinct aside to bring the killer to justice? Are they pawns in a larger conspiracy? More urgently, can MacBride smell the heated mix of emotions his egotism provokes in Wright?

Based on the short film The Guilt Sniffer a triple-award winner at Edinburgh’s 48 Hour Film Challenge 2009.
