Arthur Gutfield (Gutsy), played by Ian Mune? is dropped off at a quiet 60 bed rest home by an exasperated family desperate for a break.
He is loud, obnoxious, blunt and not one to take things sitting down.
Sit he must though, as trips longer than the toilet need a wheel chair or the mobility scooter he owns.
On a trip up the road to the shops, Gutsy collides with another mobility scooter at Pie Shop corner. It's driven by a similarly loud character from another rest home nearby.
There is arguing and posturing until Gutsy proclaims: "A race! ... Tell you what mate, we'll meet, 2am Monday night, end of Fox street. It's quiet there. We'll see who is a 'Doddery old fool driver' Ha! ...AND you have to get out of the rest home without being noticed. Those are the rules."
No easy feat, but hilariously they do it with a bit of help from a few other residents who sneak out too.
Over the next weeks it becomes a regular event, Monday night 2am. Meet, and street race the scooters for the 'Inter rest home trophy.'
Filmed entirely on location in South Dunedin this absorbing drama moves from hilarity to tenderness, as the now quite large group race and talk of life and their impending deaths. Some of this footage is from actual home residents.
A fantastic sound track of NZ music helps move this film to it's dramatic ending.
Many thanks to the rest home residents pictured for their permission to use the photo for the purposes of the poster. Frank, (4th from left), is only a few months short of being 100!
Good on ya mate!
