Waking up on the floor of a stable with a hoof print on her head, Talia Doolin initially remembers nothing of her simple, uncomplicated life. As she slowly regains her memories, she also gains the ability to "see" into the past of others — a few seconds at first, but further and further as she recovers.
Eager to do something useful with her power but afraid to expose herself to scrutiny, Talia is persuaded by a friend to apply for a job as a telephone psychic. There is a thrill in helping people reconnect with lost objects and memories, but as the only supernaturally gifted member of the staff, success at her job also earns her the suspicion and resentment of her coworkers. Despite being able to connect with people on a near-holistic level, she finds herself more isolated than ever.
When Talia begins to also see forward into the future, everything changes. She's able to anticipate unfortunate events about to happen, but is helpless to stop them without exposing herself and what she can do. Overwhelmed by her increasing ability and what it might mean that she cannot see into her own future, the troubled psychic finds herself led to an inevitable decision.
