When a previously unknown species of penguin turns up on a New Zealand beach it causes a media sensation. The whole world’s eyes turn to Wellington as the poor little fella is painstakingly nursed back to health.
As part of the crack veterinary team working on the new arrival, Sam Neilson revels in her new public profile - until the notes start to arrive. Every day a new letter, each more unhinged than the last, warning her about the penguin. Warning her to kill it while she still has the chance. Warning her to run.
Scary as the notes are, Sam can’t bring herself to take them seriously. How could her adorable little charge ever hurt anyone? She puts the letters out of her mind... until the person who first found the penguin turns up dead.
Of course, the head of the zoo doesn’t want to hear it. Their new resident is worth his weight in marketing gold, and he’ll do anything to protect that good publicity. Anything.
Before long the bodies start piling up... and it becomes clear that the “lost” penguin wasn’t lost at all. He was just the first to arrive.
Now his friends are coming, and they're hungry.
