When she is transferred to a new department at work, Jane brings with her a fictitious baby in the hope of deflecting questions about her personal life. All this seems to lead to is more questions though, and invitations to playdates and coffee mornings from well-meaning aqaintances, who are thrilled she has joined them at last. Deeply private, Jane realises she is more under scrutiny than ever thanks to her 'motherhood'. She decides to kill off the baby in a terrible driveway incident, but it seems she has unleashed something small, something demanding - something REAL. Whatever this thing is, it will not be appeased by the regular trappings of babyhood like mobiles and cuddly toys ..
