Professor Colby Ryan has to save his children from the imaginary friends that have been created from scientific research before the military do.

Professor Colby Ryan, is a father of three, with a loving wife and a job at the local university. He teaches parapsychology and psychology. He is asked to reinvestigate a series of experiments based on the Tibetan Tulpa done in the sixties and seventies, by his boss, Professor Driscoll. Tulpa are thought-beings, created by the imagination until they become real entities that can be seen by others. They eventually turn malevonent if the creator has poor mental control over them. They will try to survive even after the death of the creator. The belief is that they somehow feed off psychic energy to grow and survive.

Colby decides to use a focus group of five people and record everything using the same gear that he would use to hunt ghosts. He decides that they should all pick something pretty small and fragile to turn into a Tulpa, or as he calls them, I.F.s for invisible friends after they all watch some footage from one of the earlier experiments and see someone get thrown by an unseen force.

Frank, in his forties picks his sister who died when he was young. She loved him and would never hurt him. Rebecca, twenties, chooses a porcelan doll. Something she can smash if she has to. Connie chooses a happy monk. A religious man would be strong in his faith and gentle. Travis picks a disabled guy in a wheelchair who loves music as much as he does. Shane picks a dwarf. Someone he can toss, if he has to.

They start the experiments. Things start off pretty slow. Some changes in air temperature, then voices recorded on tape. Also on Infared cameras and then eventually full apparitions appear.

Colby starts to question the experiments when his focus group start dying in violent and bizarre ways. The military start to take an interest in his research when his wife dies. Colby decides to stop the experiments but the I.F's don't want to be stopped. He discovers his children have been trying to reproduce his experiments at home and also with deadly results. Colby has to save his children from their imagination and keep one step ahead of the military as he does it.
