Maggie Dodgshun is a low-level, underpaid medical researcher with big ambitions. But her work in the field of intelligent medical implants has yet to gain the attention of her peers. So when her long-suffering partner Alvin is diagnosed with a highly aggressive cancer, she takes it upon herself to use him as the test subject that will propel her to the recognition she deserves.
Maggie sets up a makeshift lab in her own house, determined to show the benefits of her research in a real-world scenario. Through her experimentation, Alvin becomes a high-tech triumph of medical technology, synthetic components spreading throughout his body as Maggie tries to keep up with the cancer’s progression.
When Alvin is finally proclaimed free of cancer, Maggie’s reputation in her field skyrockets, even in spite of her methods. Soon she’s winning awards left and right for her pioneering work, and Alvin has a new lease on life thanks to his cybernetic implants.
But pressure from the medical community and the promise of further success propel Maggie to obsessively continue her work on Alvin. Reluctantly supportive, Alvin soon becomes a grotesque chimera of flesh and technology barely recognisable as human, all in the name of research. Alvin grows unhappy with the treatment he’s receiving, and technology has a way of revolting on you...
