Amid the sprawl of South Auckland's state housing neighbourhoods and bleak industrial parks lives Tessa: a seventeen year old girl with a world of problems. Though highly intelligent, she is an easy target for bullies who mock her poverty, her weight and the burn scars on her legs from a childhood accident.
One afternoon, escaping her tormentors, Tessa hides in an abandoned factory where she finds a chest freezer still plugged in and running. What she sees inside takes her breath away: a beautiful boy, covered in frost and fast asleep. He awakens, introducing himself as 'Thomas', listens to her problems and invites her to visit him every day. However he reveals nothing about himself other than his need for "extreme cold" to survive.
Later that week, a gang of schoolgirls try to rob Tessa and she is accidentally stabbed. Bleeding and pursued by one of the bullies, Tessa is rescued by Thomas who violently murders the girl! Thomas then eats the bully's flesh, swallowing it raw and then places his hands on Tessa's knife-wound. It heals instantly! Thomas reveals he is a centuries old magical creature, gifted with the power to alter reality. He touches Tessa's exposed legs and heals her burn scars too. When she asks if he can make her beautiful, Thomas replies that he can do anything as long as he can consume human flesh.
Tessa moves Thomas into a meat-processing plant and lures her enemies for him to feed on. In turn he begins to transform her into the most beautiful and popular girl in school. But though their friendship blossoms, Tessa starts to run out of 'deserving' victims while Thomas increasingly demands that she take part in the kills. Soon Tessa finds herself no longer in control of their co-dependent relationship and, worse, has fallen in love with the flesh-eating monster.
As the body count rises and Thomas' power grows, Tessa must decide whether to carry on in their pact, whether her sanity is slipping and whether she can ever be redeemed for trying to become one of the beautiful people.
