Caleb is a strong and caring young man that is gifted in many ways yet he has journeyed a difficult life. After his father passed away when he was a child he was raised by his Mother and helped her deal with her epilepsy.
However once Caleb’s mother dies he is forced to live with his Aunty Abigail and her two children Alex and Kira. Abigail is a cold, wilful and controlling woman with many rules and many secrets. Kira is bedridden as a result of her schizophrenia and requires constant care. Alex is a young and troubled boy with a seemingly overactive imagination and is constantly whispering to his imaginary friend who dwells in the dark.
When Caleb’s mother comes to him in the middle of the night and warns him to get out of the house and that she can’t stay because “IT” is pushing her out he knows that he needs to confront his own guilt for her death. But after Kira whispers that he needs to help her and Alex get out of the house and stop Abigail from hurting them anymore he discovers that there is something very sinister about his Aunty Abigail.
The more he delves the more questions arise. Why is his Aunty Abigail so cruel to her own children? Why does Alex’s imaginary friend Michael only play in the shadows? Did schizophrenia really cause Kira’s catatonia? Why do both Alex and Kira wear necklaces with strange markings on them? Why does Abigail keep the basement door locked? Why is his new neighbour also warning him against his Aunty? Did Abigail’s husband really die by suicide?
In order to help his cousins and himself he must use his gifts and find the secrets hidden in the shadows. But Caleb doesn’t know that once he opens that door and sees the shadows, the shadows see him as well.
