A small team of young archeologists exploring an isolated area of New Zealand for ancient Moa remains, find an old backpack from a failed mineral-finding expedition from years before. Mysterious artefacts and notebooks referencing an undiscovered explorers' camp upriver fuels the teams' curiosity to explore further. Unfriendly locals from a small town warn them not to travel upriver for fear of the existence of a Taniwha - a legendary, supernatural monster. Ignoring the advice they head up river with terrifying and fatal consequences.

Taniwha Rising follows in the tradition of budget horror films like 'The Blair Witch Project' and 'Paranormal Activity'.
