In a rural isolated setting a neglected 10 year old boy, Ben, sees his amphetamine addicted mother, Adele, getting the glass pipe ready for the next puff. Adele doesn’t notice that while she reads a mysterious book, there is something present helping her prepare for the next hit, moving the items within her reach, propelled by a silent invisible presence.
At night, trashing in his bed, Ben sees dark hooded figures by his bedroom door but he cannot cry for help because he will be punished for it by his stepfather, Seal.
During the day, under heavy fog Ben sees the same figures surrounding an old shed where Seal is cooking meth. Seal is oblivious to the buzzing flies crawling at the entrance of his nose, at which point the shed explodes killing Seal. Adele flips out completely and brings the bloodied corpse of Seal into the house and places it in the lounge where it remains for several days.
She frightens the boy as she talks to the dead man so Ben hides under the house from where he sees dark feet walking around it. Adele finds him and drags into the house. The boy’s grandmother arrives and tries to rescue him, but Adele, following “Seal’s” orders kills her and then chases Ben into the forest. She eventually finds and kills him. But we realize that he is not yet born and she is in fact having a miscarriage.
Feeling the taste of meth in her mouth she realizes that she has the mysterious book in her hands as she sees the hooded figures around her. Who are they? Is there time for her to escape them?
