The Lonely One

A brutal murder draws a young woman back to her childhood home. Here she learns of the strange entity that haunts the area and begins to realise that her own life might be at risk as well.

The quiet West Coast town of Moana is left stunned when mother of three Grace Hini shoots her husband and two children, before turning the gun on herself. The only clue left to explain these executions are the blood smeared words ‘YOU CAN’T HAVE THEM’ on the kitchen wall.

Horribly shaken by the deaths and in need of answers, Grace’s sister; Sarah, leaves her own husband and daughter and returns to Moana, hoping to make sense of the situation. Upon reaching her childhood home, Sarah finds the house littered with bizarre flax totems and later finds an assortment of odd drawings by Grace that depict a strange human-like creature in the lake beside the town.

After viewing these images Sarah begins experiencing nightmares, nosebleeds and hears a strange voice from the kitchen sink of her motel, telling her not to be afraid. This starts a string of supernatural occurrences, causing a terrified Sarah to decide to leave Moana for good. On her way out of town she stops by the house a final time to collect some of Grace’s belongings, only to discover a dishevelled looking man leaving another of the bizarre totems. Sarah demands to know what he is doing at the house and what he knows of the death of her family. When he refuses to talk, Sarah shows him Graces drawings and he begins to explain the nature of the being in the pictures, and the long history it has with the town and its woods and waterways. He tells her that soon Sarah will die as well; there is nothing that she can do to stop this.

Frightened and confused Sarah begins to realise that the town she grew up in has many secrets and that the key to saving her own family might mean staying in Moana to face the thing she fears most. The thing that watches. The thing that waits.
